We managed to survive the fifth largest snowstorm to hit Massachusetts. I consider that a win in my book, no? As someone who grew up in southern New Jersey and remembers the Blizzard of ’96 all too well, you’d think I’d have been more prepared. Not necessarily so… just because I’ve managed to survive a few snowstorms in my life doesn’t make me any more fond of snow!
I managed to blow through my weekend stash of chocolate in a little under 12 hours. Not my proudest moment, but there you have it. We subsisted on hot cocoa, homemade nachos, and eventually take-in Mexican. Oh, and LOTS of cara cara oranges. They’re kind of our new snack of choice right now because they are damn tasty oranges. (Don’t forget: this baby’s got a thing for oranges.)
With pretty consistent rain all day Monday and Larry’s heroic efforts digging us out on Sunday, we can safely get our cars out of the driveway and slowly make our way back to civilization. Don’t get me wrong, there’s still a CRAPTON of snow on the ground, but at least it’s not nearly as overwhelming as it was this weekend.
Here below is my blizzard gallery…

Checking in on things around 11:30pm on Friday night.

The next morning, at about 11am. Compare the back bumper of my car to the previous picture to get the full scope!

At 11am Saturday morning, we had 18″ blown against the door… and it was still snowing!

All told, we got about 24″ here in Salem, Mass.

Basically 24″… plus some wicked snow drifts!

Looking down our street covered in two feet of snow… it would be awhile before the plows could even attempt our street.

I’m told cars were parked in our driveway. You almost wouldn’t know it.

Crazy snow drifts that nearly covered our three and a half foot tall grill!

Larry begins the arduous dig out process.

Four hours later and with a little neighborhood help, Larry saves the day by digging us out!

A hearty reward: snowstorm French toast with sausage and tea.
If you’re in the New England region, how did you fare during Nemo?

Awesome photos! I’m in westchester NY. I think we got more like 18″. Still a mess.
I’m glad you’re digging out and getting around. We’ve had a few blizzards in our day, and I’m thankful every year we don’t get another one. We had a warning this year for one but it didn’t follow through… I may have squealed when it didn’t. My heart goes out to you! I hate snow so much.

Wow … that’s pretty amazing. We were lucky here … just a few inches. Enough to sled, not even enough for a snowman, since it was so light and fine. My son and I have been reading Laura Ingalls Wilder’s _The Long Winter_ at night here, and I’m finding that the near-constant threat of snow in the book is apropos of February … ummm, global warming?
Glad you fared OK, and that you had some chocolate!!

We live in NH about 20 min from Portsmouth. We got around 24inches too. Took my husband several hours to dig us and our cars out. Glad to see we aren’t the only ones wishing we had a garage about now.
